2012 marks our first release of Chardonnay for Clif Family Winery. Our Chardonnay comes from Napa Valley’s Oak Knoll District, located at the southern end of the Napa Valley where cooling marine influences create a unique micro-climate that helps the grapes maintain bright fruit flavors and retain acidity. The vineyard is located on an oxbow of the Napa River and planted in alluvial soils.
The grapes were harvested early in the morning on September 18th. After arriving at the winery, they were whole cluster pressed, cold settled, racked, inoculated in tank and barrel fermented. The wine was aged for 9 months in 50% new French Oak and 50% once used French Oak and stirred on the lees twice per month.
Aromas of pineapple, stone fruit, vanilla bean and a hint of cardamom lead to a round mouth feel with a slight nuance of oak. The palate offers flavors of butterscotch and caramel mixed with bright apple, citrus and pear with a creamy mid palate and racy acidity.
